Quarterly Planning That Sticks Beyond the Workshop Room
Why most quarterly objective-setting exercises fail by week six — and how leadership teams keep commitments visible after the facilitator leaves.
We facilitate quarterly planning sessions for teams that completed an annual strategy workshop. The pattern is predictable: strong commitments on planning day, gradual drift by week six, and amnesia by week ten.
The visibility problem
Objectives that live in a document on a shared drive are invisible. Objectives that live on a wall chart in the leadership meeting room are seen every week. We photograph the wall chart at the end of every quarterly session and recommend the CEO prints it at A2 size for the meeting room.
The accountability mechanism
Each objective has one named owner — not a committee, not a department. In the monthly leadership meeting, the first agenda item is a five-minute update from each owner. This takes 25 minutes for a five-person leadership team and prevents the drift that happens when objectives have no public checkpoint.
When to call us back
If two consecutive quarters end with most objectives incomplete, the problem is usually strategic — the team is pursuing too many priorities. That is a signal for an annual strategy refresh, not a third quarterly planning session with the same overloaded list.
