Preparing Your Board for a Strategy Session That Actually Works
What board chairs and CEOs should do in the two weeks before a facilitated board strategy session — and what to avoid.
A half-day board strategy session can produce genuine strategic insight — or it can become another presentation meeting with a different title. The difference is almost entirely in preparation.
What the chair should do
Two weeks before the session, the chair should speak individually with two or three directors about what strategic questions they want addressed. This surfaces concerns that would never appear in a formal board pack. The facilitator receives a summary of these themes (anonymised if requested) and builds the session agenda around them.
What management should not do
Do not prepare a 40-slide strategy deck for the session. Slides invite presentation mode, where directors listen passively and ask polite questions. The session works when directors talk to each other, not when they watch management present.
Setting expectations
Send directors a one-page brief explaining the session format: no resolutions, no votes, no management presentations. The output is a list of strategic themes and questions for the next formal board meeting. Directors who expect a decision-making session will be disappointed; those who expect a thinking session will engage.
